About Mangrove Snapper

Mangrove Snapper — also called Gray Snapper — are one of the most abundant and reliable inshore species from Florida to Texas. These scrappy fish are excellent eating with firm, white flesh. They are found in dense schools around structure: docks, bridges, mangrove roots, rock piles, and nearshore wrecks. Gray-green on the back with lighter sides and a reddish tinge near the fins, they have a characteristic dark stripe running through the eye. Wary and smart, they are often harder to fool than larger gamefish.

Identification & Appearance

Gray to gray-green on the upper body, lighter gray on the sides with a pink-reddish hue. Dark horizontal stripe through the eye. Red-orange tinge on all fins. Large, prominent canine teeth in the front of both jaws. Relatively deep body with a pointed snout.

Male vs. Female

Males and females are nearly identical in appearance. Females may grow slightly larger on average. Both can live 20+ years.

Size, Weight & Records

Average catch is 10-14 inches (1-2 lbs). Quality fish are 14-18 inches (2-5 lbs). Fish over 5 lbs are considered trophies. The world record is 17 lbs, caught in Port Canaveral, Florida in 1992.

Best Techniques

Live shrimp or live pilchards (scaled sardines) freelined or on a small split-shot rig near structure is deadly. Light fluorocarbon leader (15-20 lb) is critical — mangroves are line-shy. Small live crabs, cut squid, and cut shrimp on 1/0 hooks fished at night around lighted docks produce limits. Chumming with live pilchards or cut sardines brings schools into a feeding frenzy. For larger mangroves on nearshore wrecks, small whole squid or live pinfish on bottom rigs work well.

Recommended Tackle

Light spinning rod (6'6"-7 ft), 2000-2500 reel, 8-10 lb braid, 15-20 lb fluorocarbon leader, size 1-1/0 hooks. Finesse is key — lighter tackle catches more mangrove snapper.

Minimum size limit is typically 10 inches total length with 10 fish aggregate snapper bag limits. Relatively liberal regulations.
