Jolly Harbour is about 20 minutes from ANU airport on Antigua's west coast. The full-service marina is home to several charter boats. Book 1-2 weeks ahead during high season (December-April). The calm leeward waters make Jolly Harbour ideal for families and those prone to seasickness. Half-day reef fishing trips are popular and affordable.

Jolly Beach South Point

Shore Fishing

The rocky point at the south end of Jolly Beach provides casting access to deeper water on the calm leeward coast. Crevalle jacks and barracuda hunt along the reef edge, and yellowtail snapper hold near the rocks.

Jolly Harbour Marina Channel

Pier Fishing

The narrow channel connecting the marina to the sea creates tidal flow that concentrates fish. Tarpon and snook stage in the channel during tide changes, and snapper hold along the rock walls.

Valley Church Beach

Just south of Jolly Harbour, Valley Church Beach offers a quiet stretch of sand with reef structure close to shore. Blue runners and jacks are common catches, and barracuda patrol the deeper water beyond the reef.

Hermitage Bay Rocks

Shore Fishing

The rocky shoreline north of Hermitage Bay holds mutton snapper and small grouper in the crevices. Cast tight to the structure with jigs or cut bait. Jacks cruise the point at dawn and dusk.

Tactics

Jolly Harbour's west coast location provides calm leeward water ideal for shore fishing. The marina channel is the top spot — fish it during tidal changes for tarpon and snook. Use 10-20 lb spinning gear for most shore species. The calm conditions allow lighter tackle and more finesse than the windward coast.

Regulations

Antigua and Barbuda does not currently require a recreational fishing license for shore fishing. The Jolly Harbour marina has specific rules about fishing from the docks — check with the marina office. Spearfishing is regulated.

Mahi mahi were piled up on the weed lines

Ran west from Jolly Harbour and found scattered weed patches loaded with mahi mahi. The fish were aggressive and we caught them on everything — live bait, jigs, and even fly tackle. Biggest mahi went 38 pounds. Jolly Harbour is a modern marina with great facilities and easy offshore access.

Flats fishing the west coast mangroves

Explored the shallow flats and mangrove-lined bays along Antigua's west coast from Jolly Harbour. Found schools of bonefish tailing on the sandy flats and caught three nice bones on fly. We also spotted a permit but it spooked before I could present the fly. Antigua has some incredible untapped flats fishing.

Bottom fishing on Antigua's west shelf was hot

Fished the reef structure and ledges on the west coast shelf out of Jolly Harbour and the bottom fishing was on fire. Mutton snapper, lane snapper, and red hind were biting aggressively on cut bait and jigs. We filled the cooler and the captain set up a beach BBQ with our catch. Doesn't get better than that.
