First-Run Kings — Soldotna's Finest
The first run of kings hit the Kenai River at Soldotna and the fish were massive. Back-bounced cured roe through the deep holes and connected with a 52-pound chrome king that bulldogged through three rapids. Two more kings over 40 pounds followed — Soldotna is ground zero for Alaska's biggest river kings.

King Salmon
Sockeye Run of a Lifetime
The Kenai River sockeye run was estimated at over 2 million fish and we were in the thick of it at Soldotna. Flipped size-8 flies on the swing and had hook-ups on every third cast. These 8 to 12 pound reds are the best-eating salmon on the planet and we filled the cooler in record time.

Silver Salmon Aggression in the Fall
The fall silver run pushed into the upper Kenai near Soldotna and these coho were angry. Every cast with a pink spinner produced a savage strike — hooked 15 silvers and retained limits of fat 10 to 13 pound fish. Silver salmon are the most aggressive species in the Kenai system and it showed today.
