Roseau receives smaller cruise ships at the Roseau cruise terminal. Douglas-Charles Airport (DCF) is the main airport, about 1 hour from Roseau on the northeast coast. Canefield Airport (DOM) is closer to Roseau but handles only small aircraft. Book charters 1-2 weeks ahead. Dominica's volcanic coastline means deep water is minutes from shore — trips are productive quickly.

The waterfront promenade along Roseau Bay offers accessible fishing from the seawall. Crevalle jacks and barracuda hunt baitfish along the rocky seafloor that drops off steeply just meters from shore. Snapper hold around the dock pilings.

Pointe Michel Rocks

The volcanic rock formations at Pointe Michel south of Roseau jut into deep water. Heavy jigs cast from the rocks reach water over 100 feet deep, attracting large barracuda and the occasional cubera snapper. A rugged but rewarding spot.

Tactics

Dominica's steep volcanic coastline means deep water is remarkably close to shore — use heavier tackle (15-30 lb) than you might expect for shore fishing. The black volcanic rock can be slippery — wear sturdy shoes. Fish dawn and dusk when predators move into the shallows. The steep dropoffs make jigging from shore effective for species you'd normally catch offshore.

Regulations

Dominica does not currently require a recreational fishing license for shore fishing. Spearfishing with scuba gear is prohibited. The Soufrière-Scotts Head Marine Reserve has specific restrictions — check locally. Turtle nesting beaches are protected.

Mahi run off Roseau was insane

Left the Roseau waterfront at dawn and ran west into the deep Caribbean water. Found a massive debris field and the mahi were absolutely piled up underneath. We caught over 20 mahi on light tackle, keeping our limit of beautiful bulls up to 35 pounds. Dominica's deep water is incredibly close to shore — we were into fish within 15 minutes.

Wahoo and tuna on our cruise excursion

We booked this charter during our Royal Caribbean stop in Roseau and it was the best decision of our vacation. The captain trolled the FADs and we caught three wahoo and two yellowfin tuna in just four hours. The volcanic coastline of Dominica rising behind us while we fought fish was absolutely spectacular.

Shore fishing the Roseau coastline

Fished from the rocky volcanic shoreline south of Roseau using metal jigs and topwater lures. The jacks were thick along the dropoff and I caught several beautiful blue runners and almaco jacks. Dominica's coastline drops off steeply into deep water, so you can catch pelagic species right from shore. Truly unique fishing.
