Booking Tips

Fajardo is about 1 hour east of SJU airport. Book flats fishing guides 2-4 weeks ahead, especially December through April when bonefish and permit fishing peaks. Morning trips offer the calmest conditions on the flats. The Fajardo ferry terminal serves Vieques and Culebra — plan fishing and ferry schedules together.

Pier Fishing

The stone jetty near the Las Croabas fishing village provides access to deep water along the channel. Crevalle jacks and horse-eye jacks patrol the dropoff, and yellowtail snapper hold near the structure.

Seven Seas Beach Reef

Shore Fishing

The shallow reef flat fronting Seven Seas Beach offers wade-fishing for bonefish and permit during incoming tides. Look for tailing fish on the sandy patches between coral heads.

Tactics

For bonefish and permit, fish the incoming tide on sandy flats with polarized glasses to sight-cast. For snook and tarpon, work mangrove edges at dawn with live bait or topwater plugs. Light spinning gear (6-10 lb) for flats, medium gear (15-20 lb) for jetty fishing.

Regulations

A Puerto Rico saltwater fishing license is required for anglers 16 and older. Bonefish are catch-and-release only. Check DNER regulations for current size and bag limits.

Monster mahi run east of Fajardo

Ran out past the islands east of Fajardo and found a massive weed line loaded with mahi mahi. We caught over 15 dolphins on light spinning tackle, with the biggest going around 35 pounds. The colors on these fish in the Caribbean sun were unreal. Fajardo's access to deep water is outstanding.

Reef fishing paradise near the cays

Fished the beautiful reefs and dropoffs around the small cays east of Fajardo and the action was nonstop. Yellowtail snapper, lane snapper, and hogfish were biting on every drop. The water clarity was insane and we could watch the fish take the bait 40 feet down. A picture-perfect day on the water.

Tarpon and snook in the Fajardo mangroves

Explored the mangrove lagoons and channels around Fajardo on a calm morning and found tarpon rolling everywhere. We jumped three tarpon between 40 and 70 pounds on live mullet and also picked up a couple of nice snook along the mangrove edges. The backcountry fishing here doesn't get enough attention.
