Cabo Rojo is about 45 minutes south of BQN airport. Book charters from the Boquerón or Puerto Real marinas 1-2 weeks ahead. The area is less touristed than San Juan, so availability is generally good. Half-day nearshore trips targeting snappers and groupers are popular and affordable.

For cliff fishing at Los Morrillos, bring heavy gear (30-50 lb) for powerful jacks. Mangrove fishing is best at dawn and dusk on moving tides.

Regulations

A Puerto Rico saltwater fishing license is required for anglers 16 and older. Bonefish are catch-and-release only. La Parguera Natural Reserve has additional restrictions — check DNER regulations.

Snapper fishing was lights out at the salt flats

Fished the nearshore reefs and structure off Cabo Rojo and the mutton snapper were thick on the bottom. We dropped live baits and jigged and landed a dozen muttons between 5 and 12 pounds. Also picked up some beautiful lane snapper for the grill. Cabo Rojo is a snapper fishing paradise.

Incredible flats fishing near La Parguera

Poled the shallow flats near La Parguera and sight-casted to bonefish tailing in the turtle grass. Landed four bones between 3 and 6 pounds on fly tackle. We also spotted permit cruising the flat but couldn't get a bite. The flats fishing in southwest Puerto Rico is a hidden gem.

Wahoo were screaming off Cabo Rojo

High-speed trolled Rapala magnums along the shelf edge off Cabo Rojo and the wahoo were on fire. We landed five wahoo between 30 and 55 pounds — those fish hit like a freight train at 15 knots. Also trolled up a nice 30-pound mahi. The southwest corner of Puerto Rico produces wahoo all year long.
