Carriacou is reached by small plane from GND (20 minutes) to Lauriston Airport or by Osprey ferry from St. George's (90 minutes). Book charter fishing through your guesthouse or directly with local captains 1-2 weeks ahead. Carriacou is small and uncommercialised — fishing here is a local experience with smaller boats and knowledgeable fishermen who know these waters intimately.

Tyrrel Bay Beach

Shore Fishing

Tyrrel Bay's protected anchorage has a long sandy beach with shallow flats that hold bonefish and permit. Jacks and barracuda patrol the harbor entrance. Wade the flats at incoming tide for bonefish, or cast from the beach toward the channel for predators.

Windward Reef Shore

Shore Fishing

The windward (east) side of Carriacou has rocky shoreline and reef structure close to shore. The rougher water concentrates baitfish against the shore, attracting snapper and jacks. Best accessed from the village of Windward.

Hillsborough Pier

Pier Fishing

The main pier at Hillsborough where the ferry docks provides easy fishing access. Snapper hold under the pier, blue runners school around the pilings, and barracuda cruise the deeper channel. Cast during quiet periods between ferry arrivals.

Sandy Island Flats

Shore Fishing

The shallow flats around Sandy Island (a short boat ride from Hillsborough) offer excellent sight-fishing for bonefish and permit. The crystal-clear water over white sand makes for world-class flats fishing. Arrange a water taxi to fish the flats at low tide.

Tactics

Carriacou offers some of the most unspoiled shore fishing in the Caribbean. The flats around Tyrrel Bay and Sandy Island hold bonefish and permit in clear water — use 6-8 lb spinning gear or fly tackle for these species. Rocky shoreline fishing on the windward side requires heavier gear (15-20 lb). Local fishermen are knowledgeable — ask at the fish market in Hillsborough for current conditions.

Regulations

Grenada's fishing regulations apply to Carriacou. No recreational shore fishing license is currently required. The Sandy Island / Oyster Bed Marine Protected Area has restrictions — check locally for current rules. Spearfishing while scuba diving is prohibited.

Untouched fishing around Carriacou's reefs

Fished the pristine reefs surrounding Carriacou and the fish were completely unpressured. We caught fat yellowtail snapper, cubera snapper, and beautiful queen triggerfish on every drop. The reefs here are some of the healthiest I've seen in the Caribbean. Carriacou is a fishing paradise that very few tourists know about.

Deep water wahoo fishing was outstanding

Trolled the deep channel between Carriacou and Union Island where the currents concentrate baitfish. The wahoo were on a serious feed and we boated five between 25 and 48 pounds. We also trolled up a pair of nice mahi. The Grenadines are a wahoo hotspot that serious anglers need to discover.

Bonefishing the flats of Sandy Island

Took a skiff to the shallow flats around Sandy Island off Carriacou and sight-fished for bonefish in crystal-clear water over white sand. Landed five bones between 2 and 5 pounds on light fly tackle. This is remote, untouched bonefishing that rivals anything in the Bahamas. Carriacou is the real deal.
