Sight-casting to reds on the Charleston flats
Poled the sight-casting flats near Charleston Harbor at low tide and found schools of redfish tailing over the oyster beds. Threw live shrimp on light tackle and hooked eight gorgeous copper reds between 22 and 28 inches. Charleston redfish on the flats is a world-class experience.

Bull redfish school in Charleston Harbor
Found a massive school of bull reds staging near the jetties in Charleston Harbor on the falling tide. Cut mullet on the bottom produced immediate hookups with reds over 35 inches. We fought fish after fish with the Ravenel Bridge as our backdrop — only in Charleston.

Cobia were everywhere in the harbor
Sight-fished for cobia cruising through Charleston Harbor and the fish were stacked up around the channel markers. Pitched live eels to cruising fish and hooked six cobia, landing four between 30 and 55 pounds. The harbor acts like a funnel for migrating cobia every spring.

Sheepshead were stacked on the pilings
Fished fiddler crabs around the dock pilings and bridge structure in Charleston Harbor and the sheepshead were biting on every drop. Landed 15 fat sheepshead between 3 and 6 pounds. These are the best-eating fish in the lowcountry and Charleston is loaded with them.

Flounder on fire in the tidal creeks
Worked the tidal creek drop-offs around Charleston with live mud minnows and the flounder were aggressive. Landed 10 flatfish with the biggest going 6 pounds. Mixed in some nice speckled trout on the same drift. The lowcountry creek system is a flounder angler's dream.

Tarpon rolling in the harbor at sunrise
Spotted tarpon rolling near the Charleston Harbor jetties at dawn and free-lined live mullet into the school. Hooked three tarpon and landed a beautiful 80-pounder after a 45-minute fight. Not many people know about the Charleston tarpon fishery, but it's absolutely legit.
