Marathon Key Bridge Fishing: Tarpon, Snapper & More
Bridge Fishing Capital of the Keys
Marathon sits in the heart of the Florida Keys, connected to the rest of the island chain by some of the most fishable bridges in the state. The old Seven Mile Bridge, the Vaca Cut Bridge, and the Tom's Harbor bridges create miles of fish-holding structure over deep channels that funnel powerful tidal currents through the Middle Keys.
Bridge fishing here is not a consolation prize for anglers without a boat — it's a legitimate, productive fishery that locals rely on year-round. Tarpon, mangrove snapper, yellowtail snapper, grouper, permit, and sharks all patrol the bridge pilings and channel edges within casting range of a fixed position.
The Old Seven Mile Bridge
The original Seven Mile Bridge was converted into a fishing and pedestrian bridge after the new span opened in 1982. It extends from Marathon (Knight's Key) toward Bahia Honda, with sections accessible on foot from the Marathon side. The pilings stand in water ranging from 10 to 25 feet deep, with the main channel running 30+ feet beneath the bridge center.
Tarpon Under the Spans
From April through July, tarpon in the 60–150 lb range stage in the channels beneath the Seven Mile Bridge. The fish use the bridge pilings as current breaks, holding in the eddies behind the concrete and feeding on crabs and baitfish swept through by the tide. Night fishing is particularly productive — tarpon move to the bridge lights and feed aggressively after dark.
The standard tarpon rig for bridge fishing: 50-lb braid on a heavy spinning reel, 80-lb fluorocarbon leader, and a 7/0 circle hook baited with a live blue crab or large pinfish. Lower the bait to mid-depth in the current and let it swing behind a piling. When a tarpon eats, the rod will nearly rip from your hands.
'I've fished the Seven Mile Bridge since I was a kid, and it still gives me a rush every tarpon season. You're standing on concrete, looking down at shadows the size of submarines cruising past the pilings. When one eats, you're in for a fight — a 100-pound tarpon with bridge pilings to wrap you around is the ultimate test of tackle and nerves.' — Mike Hensel, Marathon bridge-fishing regular
Snapper and Bottom Species
Year-round, the bridge pilings hold mangrove snapper, yellowtail snapper, and gray snapper. Drop a live shrimp or cut ballyhoo on a #1 hook tight to the pilings on any moving tide. Smaller fish (8–12 inches) are constant; patience and timing — fishing the stronger tide phases around new and full moons — produces the keeper-sized fish over 10 inches.
Vaca Cut Bridge
Vaca Cut connects the ocean side to the bay side of Marathon through a narrow, deep channel. The tidal flow here is extreme, creating a washing-machine effect that concentrates bait and predators. Snook, tarpon, and large jack crevalle ambush bait in the current. This is heavy-tackle territory — anything under 20-lb line risks getting smoked on the first run.
Tom's Harbor Bridges
The two Tom's Harbor bridges (Channel 2 and Channel 5) east of Marathon offer calmer water and more forgiving fishing for families and beginners. Mangrove snapper, yellowtail snapper, and small grouper populate the pilings. The channels between the bridges hold permit on incoming tides — a surprise encounter that elevates a casual bridge trip into a memorable one.

Tide and Timing Strategy
Bridge fishing in Marathon is 100% tide-dependent. Slack tide produces almost nothing — the current is what positions bait and triggers predator feeding. Fish the two hours on either side of peak tidal flow for the best action. Check NOAA tide charts for Marathon (Vaca Key) at tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov before every trip.
Night fishing outperforms daytime for tarpon and snapper. The bridge lights create the same shadow-line dynamic found at mainland bridges, drawing bait and predators into predictable positions.
Access and Rules
The old Seven Mile Bridge is walk-up accessible from the Marathon end — park at the Knight's Key campground area. Vaca Cut and Tom's Harbor bridges can be accessed from roadside pulloffs along US 1. There is no charge to fish from public bridges in the Keys.
Marathon's surrounding waters also deliver quality mangrove snapper fishing in Marathon on the patch reefs and tarpon fishing in Marathon on the flats for anglers who want to combine bridge fishing with boat-based trips.
