The volcanic origin of the island means deep water sits just offshore — in some places, the seafloor drops to 1,000+ feet within a mile of the coast.
What to Catch
The steep drop-off creates an upwelling of nutrients that attracts baitfish and the predators that follow. Blue marlin, yellowfin tuna, wahoo, mahi-mahi, and sailfish are all regular catches. The island's waters are less fished than nearby Martinique or Guadeloupe, meaning the fish are less pressured and often larger. Reef fishing produces snapper, grouper, and barracuda.
