Freeport: Grand Bahama's Fishing Hub
Freeport is the second-largest city in the Bahamas and the gateway to Grand Bahama Island's diverse fishing opportunities. The city's Lucayan Harbour receives cruise ships from Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Norwegian, and other major lines, making it an excellent port for fishing excursions. Offshore, the deep waters north of the island hold wahoo, mahi mahi, and blue marlin. Inshore, the east-end flats are among the best bonefishing destinations in the northern Bahamas.
Deep Sea Fishing
The deep water north of Grand Bahama drops quickly into the Gulf Stream corridor, putting charter boats into prime trolling territory within 20-30 minutes of leaving the dock. Wahoo are the star of the show from December through March, with fish averaging 30-50 pounds and occasional trophies exceeding 70 pounds. Mahi mahi run thick along weed lines from March through May, and blue marlin move through from May through July. Full-day and half-day charters are available from Freeport's marinas.
Bonefishing the East End
Grand Bahama's east end, centered around McLean's Town and Deep Water Cay, features vast flats systems that rival Andros for bonefishing quality. The famous Deep Water Cay Club has been hosting fly anglers since the 1950s, and the flats around Sweeting's Cay and the east end produce bonefish averaging 4-6 pounds with trophy fish over 10 pounds. These flats are less crowded than more famous destinations, offering a more intimate fishing experience.
Reef and Bottom Fishing
Peterson Cay National Park, a small island just offshore from Lucaya Beach, is surrounded by healthy reef systems that hold yellowtail snapper, mutton snapper, grouper, and barracuda. Reef fishing trips are typically half-day outings that work well for families and cruise ship visitors with limited time. The calm leeward waters on the south side of the island make for comfortable fishing year-round.
