Corpus Christi offers more shore-based fishing access than almost any city on the Texas coast. Bob Hall Pier
The Landmark
Bob Hall Pier extends over 1,200 feet into the Gulf of Mexico from Padre Island, placing anglers directly over deep nearshore water that holds a rotating cast of species year-round. The pier was rebuilt after Hurricane Harvey and reopened as a modern structure with improved lighting, railings, and fish-cleaning tables.

Pier Fishing Tips
The T-head at the pier's end is the most productive zone, offering access to the deepest water and the strongest current. Arrive early on weekends to secure a spot at the T-head railing. Bring a pier net (drop net) for landing large fish — no gaff is allowed, and lifting a heavy fish on the line from pier height often means a broken line. Most pier regulars use medium-heavy rods in the 7 to 8-foot range, which provides enough backbone to control fish near the pilings.
Packery Channel Jetties
Packery Channel cuts through Padre Island between the Gulf and the Upper Laguna Madre, and the rock jetties on both sides of the channel are accessible by foot from parking areas. The channel side produces sheepshead in winter (December through March), mangrove snapper in summer, and redfish year-round. The Gulf side fishes well for pompano and whiting when the surf is calm.
Working the Channel Current
Tidal flow through Packery Channel concentrates bait against the jetty rocks, and predators set up in the current eddies formed by rock points and gaps. Fish the downstream side of any rocky projection — that's where the current creates a slack pocket and fish wait for food to drift past. A 1/4 oz jighead with a shrimp-pattern soft plastic, bounced along the rock edge, is the most efficient way to cover water from the jetties.
Corpus Christi Bay Front
The seawall along Shoreline Boulevard in downtown Corpus Christi provides walk-up access to Corpus Christi Bay. While this isn't wilderness fishing, the bay front produces surprisingly well for black drum, sheepshead, and small redfish around the submerged structure near the marinas. Evening fishing under the marina lights attracts speckled trout feeding on shrimp and small baitfish drawn to the illumination.

What to Bring for Shore Fishing in Corpus
- Rod holders: Sand spike for the beach, rod belt for the pier, and a rock-mounted holder for the jetties
- Drop net: Essential for pier fishing. A 36-inch hoop net on a rope handles most species
- Bait variety: Dead shrimp, Fishbites, and a few pompano jigs cover the basics. Add live shrimp from the bait stand at the pier entrance when available.
- Footwear: Closed-toe shoes with grip for the jetties. Flip-flops are fine on the pier but dangerous on wet granite
License Requirements
All anglers 17 and older need a Texas saltwater fishing license. A saltwater stamp is included in the all-water license package. Licenses are available at the Bob Hall Pier bait stand, local tackle shops, and online through TPWD's licensing page. The pier itself does not require an additional access fee beyond normal parking.
