Shore Fishing Around Simpson Bay
Simpson Bay Lagoon is one of the largest enclosed bodies of water in the Caribbean, and its edges offer plenty of shore fishing opportunities. The lagoon holds tarpon, snook, jacks, and snapper, while the ocean-side beaches produce different species along the reef edges.
Where to Cast
- Simpson Bay Bridge: The bridge opening creates a tidal flow that pulls baitfish through the channel. Tarpon and jacks stack up here, especially during the evening bridge openings. Cast swimbaits or live bait into the current.
- Lagoon Shoreline (Airport Side): The mangrove edges near Princess Juliana Airport hold snook and juvenile tarpon. Fish with live shrimp or small topwater lures at dawn.
- Kim Sha Beach: The western end of this beach has rocky structure that attracts snapper and small grouper. Bottom rigs with cut bait work best.
Practical Advice
The lagoon fishes best on moving tides, particularly when the bridge opens and creates strong current flow. A medium-light spinning rod with 12-15 lb braid is ideal for lagoon species. For the ocean side, step up to 20 lb braid with a wire leader if barracuda are around. Bait is available at the marina tackle shops.
Simpson Bay's lagoon provides some of the most accessible and productive shore fishing on the island. The tarpon action around the bridge alone is worth bringing a rod to Sint Maarten.
