Panama City Beach sits on one of the most productive stretches of Gulf of Mexico bottom in the entire Southeast. The nearshore artificial reef program is one of Florida's largest, the natural limestone ledges hold stacked-up bottom fish, and the bluewater trolling grounds along the continental shelf edge produce pelagics from spring through fall. Nearshore: The Bread and Butter
Bay County has deployed over 1,000 artificial reef structures in the Gulf, creating one of the densest reef networks along the Florida Panhandle. These concrete culverts, steel structures, and decommissioned vessels sit in 40 to 80 feet of water and hold impressive populations of reef fish.
During Red Snapper season in Panama City Beach, the nearshore wrecks produce fast limits for anglers who don't want to spend hours running offshore. Vermilion Snapper (locally called Beeliners) bite year-round on these same structures using chicken rigs tipped with squid strips. Mid-Range: The Big Bottom Fish
Push 20 to 35 miles offshore and you reach the natural limestone ledges that PCB captains guard like state secrets. This is Gag Grouper territory, with fish holding tight to vertical relief and ambushing live bait. Gag season in Gulf federal waters typically runs June 1 through December 31, and the fish around PCB average 15 to 25 pounds with the occasional 30-plus-pound sow mixed in.
Amberjack share these same ledges and provide some of the most brutal fights in the Gulf. A big AJ on conventional tackle in 150 feet of water is a genuine physical challenge. The federal season is limited, so timing matters.

Bluewater: Chasing Pelagics on the Edge
The continental shelf edge southeast of Panama City Beach is a pelagic highway during the warmer months. From May through September, Yellowfin Tuna in the 30 to 80-pound class roam the shelf break, feeding on flying fish and squid along temperature breaks and current edges.
Mahi-Mahi show up when weed lines and debris push in from the Loop Current, sometimes as close as 40 miles out. Wahoo are caught year-round along the edge but peak in fall and winter when water temps moderate. The rare Blue Marlin hookup — PCB produces them every season — is the offshore angler's ultimate Gulf prize.
What a Bluewater Trip Looks Like
Most bluewater charters out of PCB are full-day or overnight trips. Expect a 2 to 3-hour run to the edge, followed by a mix of trolling along temperature breaks and chunk fishing over structure. Overnight trips often anchor up on a deep wreck for nighttime Swordfish attempts, which have become increasingly popular in the Gulf.
Charter Selection Tips
- Half-day nearshore trips are ideal for families and casual anglers. Fast action, shorter boat rides, and limits of eating fish are typical outcomes.
- Full-day bottom trips target the premium species — Grouper, big Snapper, Amberjack. These require more commitment but the quality of fish is significantly higher.
- Bluewater charters demand a bigger budget and a flexible schedule, since weather windows dictate when you can safely run to the edge. Book with a captain who runs bluewater regularly, not one who does it as an occasional add-on.
What to Bring
Offshore trips in the Gulf can mean rough conditions even on forecast-calm days. Bring non-marking shoes, rain gear, sunscreen, and seasickness medication if you have any doubt about your sea legs. Most Panama City Beach offshore charters provide all tackle, bait, ice, and fish cleaning. Your job is to show up on time — boats leave the Grand Lagoon docks early, typically 5:30 to 6:00 AM.
