Salt water pool builders in Colorado

Concept visualization

In brief

Saltwater Pros designs and builds custom salt water pools, lagoons and hot tubs in Colorado. A pool here has to handle strong high-altitude sun, dry air, expansive clay and a hard winter, so those four things shape every design.

Water at altitude

Colorado is one of the best places in the country to sit beside water, and one of the more demanding places to build it.

The light is clear, the evenings are dry and the views do half the design work. The same conditions are hard on a pool. Sun strips chlorine. Dry air lifts water and heat off the surface. The ground moves, and for a third of the year it freezes.

None of that is a reason not to build. It is a reason to build with a design made for the site.

Five things Colorado changes

  • Strong sun. Ultraviolet light burns off chlorine faster at altitude. The salt system is sized above the pool's volume and the stabilizer level is set to protect what it makes.
  • Dry air and cool nights. Evaporation takes water and heat together. A good cover is the single most useful accessory on a Colorado pool.
  • Freeze and thaw. Plumbing, equipment and the shell are detailed so the pool can be closed properly and come back in spring without surprises.
  • Moving ground. Expansive clay swells when it takes on water. Structure and drainage are engineered from a soils report, not from habit.
  • A shorter season. Heat, wind shelter and a built-in hot tub stretch the months you actually use the space.

What we build here

Salt water pools
Custom inground pools drawn around the house and the slope of the land. See salt water pools.
Custom lagoons
Beach entries and curved edges set among buff sandstone, native grasses and pines. See custom lagoons.
Hot tubs and spas
Built in beside the pool and used on clear, cold nights long after the pool is covered. See hot tubs.
The space around it
Terraces, fire and shelter from the wind, so the pool is somewhere to be and not only somewhere to swim.

A Colorado pool through the year

  1. Spring

The pool is opened and balanced. Chlorine is added by hand until the water warms past the salt cell's cold cutoff, usually 50 to 60 degrees.

  2. Summer

The salt system does the work. Strong sun means the stabilizer level and pump run time matter more than they would at sea level.

  3. Autumn

Leaves, cooling water and shorter days. The cover goes on at night and the hot tub starts earning its keep.

  4. Winter

Most pools are closed: water balanced, lines protected, the salt cell drained or removed. The hot tub carries on.

The full routine is in our salt water pool maintenance guide.

Questions

Colorado pool questions

Can you have a salt water pool in Colorado?

Yes. Salt water pools work well here. The salt system is sized for strong sun, and because salt cells stop producing in cold water, the pool is either closed for winter or given another sanitizing method for the cold months.

How long is the swimming season in Colorado?

It depends on elevation and on whether the pool is heated and covered. With a heater and a good cover, most Front Range owners swim comfortably from late spring into early autumn. A built-in hot tub is used all year.

Do I need to heat a pool in Colorado?

In practice, yes. Nights are cool even in midsummer. A heater sets the temperature, and a cover is what keeps it there until morning.

Does altitude affect a salt water pool?

It does. Ultraviolet light is stronger, so chlorine breaks down faster, and dry air speeds up evaporation. The answer is a correctly sized salt system, the right stabilizer level and a cover.

Is Colorado soil a problem for pools?

It can be. Much of the Front Range sits on expansive clay that swells when wet. A soils report tells the engineer what the structure and the drainage need to do.
